"Marriage Is a Trap" – Content Creator Victoire Mahounou Reveals Why She Doesn't Believe in the Institution

Content creator Victoire Mahounou has revealed why she does not believe in marriage, describing the institution as something people use to "trap themselves for life," a perspective she said is partly influenced by the early loss of her mother.

"Marriage Is a Trap" – Content Creator Victoire Mahounou Reveals Why She Doesn't Believe in the Institution

Speaking during a conversation with Cyril Okoi, Mahounou said her views on marriage are also influenced by the fact that she did not grow up witnessing her parents in a loving relationship. "I don't believe in marriage.

People just use that one to trap themselves for life," she said . When Okoi asked whether her perspective could be connected to not experiencing a proper partnership while growing up, Mahounou explained that she lost her mother when she was just 10 years old and did not have the experience of seeing both parents together and in love.

"I did not see anybody love up on anybody," she stated, suggesting that her childhood experiences shaped her perception of relationships and marriage.

The content creator's perspective challenges the societal expectation that marriage is a fundamental life goal, a view that is deeply ingrained in many cultures, including Nigeria, where marriage is often seen as a milestone of success and achievement.

Mahounou argued that many people rush into marriage without fully understanding what they are committing to, only to realise later that they have trapped themselves in an unhappy relationship.

She also suggested that the institution of marriage is often used as a tool to control and restrict individuals, limiting their personal freedom and growth.

Reactions to Mahounou's comments have been mixed, with some applauding her for challenging societal norms and others accusing her of being cynical. One social media user wrote, "Marriage is beautiful if you find the right person.

It's not a trap," while another argued, "She is right. Many people are trapped in unhappy marriages."

The debate highlights the growing conversation about the relevance of marriage in modern society, as more people question whether the institution is necessary for a fulfilling life.

Despite the mixed reactions, Mahounou remains firm in her stance, emphasising that she values personal freedom and independence above the security of marriage.

Her decision to speak openly about her beliefs has added to the growing discourse on relationships and the choices available to women in the 21st century, as more women are choosing to prioritise their personal goals and happiness over societal expectations.

Kunmie ‘22’ Album Review: Kunmie Turns Love, Pressure and Growing Pains Into His Most Personal Statement Yet

With 22, Kunmie attempts to fill in those gaps. The 13-track album is not built around the idea of proving that he can make another “Arike.” Instead, it spends much of its time exploring the person behind the success. There is love here, of course, but there is also uncertainty, ambition, loneliness, faith and the pressure that comes with trying to build a life while still figuring out who you are.
