“The Lack of Trust Among Nigerians Is Alarming” - Brain Jotter Shares His Experiences

Nigerian comedian Brain Jotter has sparked a conversation about honesty and trust in everyday transactions, sharing several personal experiences that left him questioning whether Nigerians can still take people at their word.

Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter has raised concerns about what he described as the alarming level of distrust among Nigerians, sharing several personal experiences that he says have made it increasingly difficult to take people at their word.

Speaking during an interview, the comedian argued that Nigerians often have to go the extra mile to verify even seemingly simple transactions because of widespread dishonesty.

“The lack of trust in Nigeria is alarming.”

Brain Jotter gave an example involving fuel money, saying even entrusting a driver with money for a simple purchase can become a matter of concern. According to him, a person could give a driver N5,000 for fuel, only for the driver to spend less and still provide a receipt showing the full amount.

“You send your driver N5,000 for fuel, but he’s buying N3,500. If you ask him for a receipt, you’ll get the receipt. Men dey run receipt.”

His comment highlights the level of suspicion that can develop when people feel they cannot rely on others to be completely honest.

The comedian also recounted his experience purchasing an expensive wig for his mother. Admitting that he knows very little about wigs, Brain Jotter said he spent more than 800,000 Naira on one, only to become concerned about the additional products and costs attached to the purchase.

“I wanted to buy a wig for my mama. I bought this wig, N800 and something thousand. And I don’t know about wigs. Then she brought the wig and shampoo, and more. Overpriced nonsense everywhere.”

The experience left him questioning whether consumers always get genuine value for the prices they are charged. He also raised concerns about the authenticity of some products, particularly beverages, saying it can sometimes be difficult for ordinary consumers to determine exactly what they are purchasing.

Perhaps one of his most frustrating experiences involved a Toyota Sienna he purchased after relying on a mechanic to inspect the vehicle. Brain Jotter said he was assured that the vehicle’s engine was in good condition, with the seller reportedly describing it as a “mad engine.”

However, after purchasing the car, he began noticing an unusual sound coming from the engine. He eventually discovered that the vehicle’s problem had apparently been cleared rather than properly fixed, according to his account.

The comedian said he ended up driving the vehicle for no more than four days.

“That car, I no drive am four days. Nigerians go through these things.”

Brain Jotter’s stories have resonated with Nigerians who say they have experienced similar situations in everyday transactions from buying cars and electronics to paying for services and purchasing supposedly original products. His larger point is that the problem goes beyond one dishonest seller, driver or mechanic.

For him, the repeated experiences have created an environment where people feel they must constantly verify, double-check and question transactions that should ordinarily be straightforward.

And as Brain Jotter put it:

“The lack of trust in Nigeria is alarming.”
