After 12 Years of Operation, Uber Shuts Down in Nigeria

The company made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday, saying it had decided to wind down its Nigerian operations following a thorough review of its business. "We are writing to share some difficult news.

After a thorough review, we have taken the difficult decision to wind down operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026," Uber said.

The company said it launched in Lagos in 2014 and expressed gratitude to Nigerians for trusting its platform to connect them with independent transportation providers for daily commutes, trips to visit loved ones, and other journeys.

Uber acknowledged that its exit could disrupt customers' routines and apologised for the inconvenience. "We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience," the company said.

The company also said its Help Centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with any final account-related enquiries . The decision follows years of challenges in the Nigerian market, including driver protests over fares, commission rates, and rising fuel costs.

The exit comes shortly after a dispute between e-hailing platforms and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria over commercial transport operations at airports.

However, Uber clarified that its decision to leave Nigeria was not related to the FAAN directive. The company said the decision was limited strictly to Nigeria and Uganda and would not affect its operations across the rest of the continent.

Uber's departure marks a significant development in Nigeria's ride-hailing industry, where app-based transport services have become an important part of daily movement in urban centres.

The company has also planned to cut about 3,300 jobs globally as part of a restructuring effort . As the company exits, drivers and riders will have to adjust to the changes, with many hoping that other ride-hailing platforms will step in to fill the gap left by Uber.
