81-Year-Old Museveni Sworn In for Seventh Term as Uganda's President
Yoweri Museveni is not going anywhere. The 81-year-old Ugandan president has been sworn in for his seventh term, and if he completes it, he will remain in office until 2031. That will be over forty years of ruling Uganda.
The inauguration took place amid tight security across Kampala. Armoured vehicles and security operatives were deployed around key areas. Authorities said the measures were meant to maintain order, but it was clear that they were taking no chances. Any gathering that could turn into a protest was going to be shut down quickly.
Museveni was declared the winner of the January election with more than 70 percent of the vote. His main challenger, Bobi Wine, rejected the outcome completely. He alleged widespread electoral malpractice including ballot stuffing, intimidation of opposition supporters, and manipulation of results. Electoral officials denied the accusations and maintained that the poll was credible.
But Bobi Wine and his supporters are not convinced. They say the same thing they have said for years, that Museveni has turned Uganda into a one-party state disguised as a democracy. That opposition candidates cannot compete fairly. That the security forces are used to suppress dissent. And that the election results are pre-determined before any vote is cast.
Reactions from across Africa have been mixed. Some leaders have congratulated Museveni and called the election a success. Others have remained silent, not wanting to endorse what many see as a flawed process. Ordinary Ugandans are divided, some genuinely support Museveni, others are tired of his rule but afraid to say so publicly.
Museveni has been in power since 1986. That is before many of his citizens were even born. He has seen other African leaders come and go, some forced out by coups, others by elections. But he remains standing, and now he has another term to add to his record.
Whether this will be his last term is anyone's guess. He has said before that he would step aside, but he never does. The opposition will keep fighting, but for now, Museveni is still the man in charge.
