A Vote for Peter Obi in 2027 Is a Vote for Tinubu – ADC Chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo

Former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has said that voting for Peter Obi in 2027 would ultimately benefit President Bola Tinubu, not the opposition.

A Vote for Peter Obi in 2027 Is a Vote for Tinubu – ADC Chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo has made a stunning statement that will likely ruffle feathers in the opposition camp. Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV on Wednesday, the ADC chieftain argued that opposition parties must unite behind a single candidate to stand a realistic chance of defeating President Tinubu in 2027. According to him, a divided opposition would only strengthen Tinubu's chances of securing a second term, and anyone who votes for Peter Obi without the backing of a united coalition is essentially voting for Tinubu. His logic is simple – the opposition vote is limited, and if it is split between multiple candidates, the incumbent will win even with a minority of the total votes. He said, "Either you're working for Tinubu directly, in other words you're in the APC, or you're working for Tinubu indirectly because when you divide the votes of the coalition and the opposition, you're still making Tinubu better placed to win." It is a practical argument that focuses on strategy rather than ideology, and it has reignited the debate about whether opposition parties can set aside their differences for the sake of defeating a common enemy. The online space has been buzzing with reactions to Okonkwo's statement. Some people agree with him, arguing that the opposition's failure to unite in 2023 handed victory to Tinubu, and the same mistake cannot be repeated in 2027. They point to Kenya, where opposition leader Raila Odinga finally won after multiple attempts because the opposition united behind him. Others disagree, saying that Nigerians should vote for the best candidate regardless of party affiliations, and that forcing people to support a candidate they do not believe in will not lead to good governance. Peter Obi's supporters, known as Obidients, have been particularly vocal in their criticism of Okonkwo's statement. They argue that Obi won the hearts of Nigerians in 2023 despite the odds, and he can do it again without merging with other parties. They accuse Okonkwo of trying to pressure Obi into a coalition that would dilute his brand and alienate his supporters. Okonkwo has not responded to the backlash, and he stands by his position that unity is the only path to victory.
