The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reacted to the recent abduction of pupils, teachers, and school officials during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, condemning the incident strongly.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the Christian body described the attack as a “national disgrace” and a disturbing sign of worsening insecurity spreading into parts of the country previously considered relatively safe.
According to reports, heavily armed attackers stormed multiple schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities, abducting dozens of schoolchildren and teachers, while also killing innocent victims including a teacher believed to have been beheaded.
CAN expressed outrage that Nigerian children can no longer sit safely in classrooms without fear of being kidnapped, urging the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to deploy all available resources to rescue the victims and dismantle the criminal organisations.
The group also warned that insecurity, once concentrated in parts of northern Nigeria, is now spreading dangerously into the South-West, threatening public confidence and national stability.
The attack has drawn nationwide condemnation, with several groups and public officials demanding urgent intervention and stronger protection for schools and rural communities.
