Court Orders Natasha Akpoti to Pay 1bn for Defaming Yahaya Bello
A major legal battle has taken a decisive turn, as a court ruling involving Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Yahaya Bello continues to spark widespread reactions across Nigeria.
The Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has ordered the senator to pay 1 billion Naira in damages over statements deemed defamatory against the former governor.
The case stems from comments made during Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Novemer 4, 2022, where Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly made strong allegations against Bello. In the broadcast, she described the former governor as “a murderer, killer, perpetrator of evil acts, and a terror to the people of Kogi State,” which the court said was “without justification” and damaging to his reputation.
After reviewing the case, the court ruled in Bello’s favour, stating that the claims met the legal threshold for defamation. Beyond the 1 billion Naira damages, the court also issued a perpetual injunction, preventing the senator from repeating the statements in question.
