Every Seven Minutes, a Woman Dies During Childbirth in Nigeria – UNICEF Raises Alarm

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised an alarm over Nigeria's worsening maternal mortality rate, stating that a woman dies every seven minutes during childbirth in the country.

Every Seven Minutes, a Woman Dies During Childbirth in Nigeria – UNICEF Raises Alarm

This is a heartbreaking statistic. Every seven minutes, a Nigerian woman dies while giving birth. That is not a yearly figure. That is not a monthly figure. That is every single day, around the clock, mothers are losing their lives trying to bring new life into the world. UNICEF raised this alarm, and the numbers are staggering. The Chief of the UNICEF Maiduguri Field Office, Francis Busiku Butichi, made the disclosure on Friday in Maiduguri during the symbolic handover of WASHFIT supplies to health facilities in Borno State. So what is killing these women? According to UNICEF, poor hygiene conditions, weak infection prevention systems, and unsafe environments in many health facilities across the country are major contributors. Women are going to hospitals to deliver, but those hospitals are not safe. Infections spread, complications are not handled properly, and mothers pay with their lives.

Butichi noted that health facilities, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected areas, play a critical role as the first line of defence against disease outbreaks and public health emergencies. But if those facilities are not equipped or maintained, they become death traps instead of safe havens.

Reactions have been pouring in. Many Nigerians are angry, saying that this is what happens when leaders neglect the health sector. Money that should go to hospitals ends up in private pockets. Equipment that should save lives never gets purchased. And women die as a result. Others are calling for urgent action. They want the government to declare a state of emergency on maternal health. They want more funding for rural hospitals, better training for healthcare workers, and accountability for officials who fail to do their jobs. Some women have shared their own near-death experiences during childbirth. They talk about bleeding out in poorly equipped hospitals, about nurses who were rude or absent, about doctors who did not have the right tools. They survived, but millions of others have not.

UNICEF has raised the alarm. Now the question is, will anyone in power listen?
