“He Made a Big Mistake” - Reno Omokri Criticizes Davido’s ‘Bring Them Home’ Campaign at FIFA World Cup Event

Former presidential aide and commentator Reno Omokri has sparked fresh debate after criticizing Davido’s decision to use his FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert appearance to advocate for the release of abducted Oyo State schoolchildren.

“He Made a Big Mistake” - Reno Omokri Criticizes Davido’s ‘Bring Them Home’ Campaign at FIFA World Cup Event

Following Davido’s well-received performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles, a new controversy has erupted. The Afrobeats superstar had caught the attention of the world when he performed in a jacket with the message “BRING THEM HOME,” a call for the safe return of the kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. Many Nigerians have hailed the gesture as an effort to use the international stage to draw attention to the country’s security challenges. But Reno Omokri has a different take. Reacting to the singer’s advocacy, Omokri said the publicity being given to kidnappings on the major global platforms may actually be in the interest of the terrorists and the kidnappers.

“Publicity is one of the things these groups want because it amplifies their actions, spreads fear, and gives them the attention they are looking for,” he said.

Davido’s intention might have been good but the strategy was wrong, Omokri maintained. He said that too much international attention on active kidnappings could complicate the rescue effort and reward kidnappers with the publicity they seek.

His comments sparked immediate online debate. Davido’s fans said that silence has never been the solution to Nigeria’s security problem and that there is a responsibility for those in positions of influence to give a voice to the victims and their families. Many praised the singer for taking advantage of one of the world’s biggest entertainment stages to remind authorities and the international community that innocent children are still being held captive. Others, however, agreed with Omokri’s position that security issues are sensitive and public campaigns sometimes have unintended consequences.

And while Nigerians are still deliberating the issue, Davido’s three-word message, “Bring Them Home” is gonna have tongues wagging for a while.
