“He Was Literally a Wizard” — Akon Recalls Meeting Teenage Wizkid Before Fame
Global music star Akon has shared a story about first meeting Wizkid as a teenager, revealing that the future Afrobeats superstar was already displaying extraordinary talent long before the world knew his name.
In a recent interview on the ‘We Need To Talk’ podcast, the Senegalese-American singer, Akon has mentioned the impact Wizkid has on the global success of Afrobeats. Akon recalled meeting the Nigerian star when he was just 14 or 15 years old, describing him as a gifted young artist whose brilliance was impossible to ignore.
According to Akon:
“When I first met Wizkid, he was like 14, maybe 15. He was a kid. That’s why they called him Wizkid. He was literally a wizard at that age. He was writing for other artists, including Banky W.”
The revelation has excited fans, many of whom see it as further proof that Wizkid’s rise to global superstardom was years in the making. Before becoming one of Africa’s biggest music exports, Wizkid was signed to Banky W’s label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), where he launched his breakout career. Akon revealed that he had also indirectly signed Wizkid at that time because he was one of the investors in Empire Mates Entertainment then.
Akon has long played a role in the international expansion of African music, having worked with several African stars and spoken openly about his belief in the continent’s talent. His praise for Wizkid adds another chapter to the singer’s growing legacy as one of Afrobeats’ greatest pioneers.
Fans online have reacted warmly to the story, with many calling it a reminder that true greatness often shows itself early and that Wizkid has always been in a league of his own and according to Akon, the “Starboy” was a wizard from the very beginning.
