Favour Agbor's tragic death has sent shockwaves through Nigeria. The 20-year-old nursing student traveled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after seeing an advertisement for content creation training by popular Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, known as Odogwu Asaba.
According to police reports, she was taken to a hotel where she was allegedly raped despite her pleas that she was a virgin and did not want any sexual relationship.
After the ordeal, Favour recorded a video describing what happened before ingesting a toxic substance and passing away.
In her video, Favour revealed that she had reported the rape to her mother, who sent her transport fare to return to Warri. The family did not report to a hospital or the police for proper documentation or therapy.
Ossai Ovie, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, reacted to this in a strongly worded Facebook post, stating that Favour's parents failed her by not taking immediate action.
"As a mother, she should have asked her to go to the nearest police station while she looked for ways to join her in Asaba, instead of sending her transport fare to return to Warri," he wrote.
Ossai also suggested the family may have blamed the victim for traveling to meet a man in a hotel, which he strongly condemned. "In a situation like this, you don't blame the victim first, you do everything possible for her to get treatment as justice," he added .
The governor's aide stressed that parents and guardians have a primary responsibility to protect their children, even if it means losing their own lives for them.
He outlined what he described as the correct steps for families responding to sexual assault cases: immediate medical attention, a formal police report, and counselling.
He warned that silence or handling such matters privately only denies the victim justice and healing. Odogwu Asaba has since been arrested and is in police custody, with the Delta State Police Command confirming that a full investigation is underway.
Ossai Ovie has pledged to personally follow up on the matter to ensure the family receives full justice and that the suspect "should, by no means, be granted any freedom in his life".
The tragic death of Favour Agbor has sparked widespread outrage across social media, with many Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation into the allegations against the content creator.
As the conversation continues, Ossai's words have reignited discussions about the importance of supporting victims of sexual violence and holding perpetrators accountable.
