Speaking on the "At His Right Hand" podcast hosted by Olive Emodi, Sharon recounted how Shawn's approach to their courtship was completely different from what she had experienced before.
According to her, Shawn set clear boundaries from the start, telling her they could not have sex before marriage. She said, "When I first started dating him, he was like, we can't have s3x before marry.
I said no problem & then he says, oh, you also can't come to my house, because if you come to my house, we'll be alone. I'm like, hey, I know say this guy dey hide something".
His insistence on maintaining boundaries immediately made her question his intentions, as she had never encountered a man who was so intentional about protecting their relationship in that way.
Sharon admitted that she carried emotional baggage from past relationships into her courtship with Shawn, making it difficult for her to trust his intentions.
She confessed that she had been so accustomed to men who were dishonest or had hidden agendas that Shawn's honesty initially felt like a red flag to her.
Rather than appreciating his integrity, she found herself looking for hidden motives, wondering why he would wait for marriage or avoid situations that could compromise their relationship.
"His honesty was a problem for me, and the way he loved me was also too much for me," she confessed, acknowledging that her past experiences had shaped her perspective in ways she had not fully recognized at the time.
The actress also shared a specific incident that tested their boundaries early in their relationship. She revealed that during a trip to Lagos, her flight arrived late, and the hotel she had booked was fully booked.
Desperate for a place to stay, she called Shawn and asked if she could spend the night at his house. She said, "I was supposed to come to Lagos for something & my flight was really late. I landed & the hotel I was supposed to stay in were fully booked. So I'm like, please let me just stay in your house & I will go to my hotel".
Shawn, however, remained firm, refusing to compromise the boundaries he had set. "He didn't let me stay, he said no," Sharon revealed, adding that she was frustrated at the time but later came to appreciate his discipline and commitment to honouring their relationship.
The couple eventually married in October 2024 in a beautiful ceremony attended by family, friends, and colleagues. Reflecting on her journey, Sharon said she eventually realized that Shawn's honesty and intentional love were not red flags but gifts she had not been ready to receive.
She described how his steady, consistent love eventually broke down the walls she had built, helping her heal from past hurts and trust in the relationship.
The couple's story serves as a powerful reminder that true love often requires patience and an openness to receive love in ways that may initially feel unfamiliar, and that the right partner will not only respect boundaries but also help their partner heal from past wounds.
