"I Almost Bathed in Boiling Bleach" – Fitness Instructor Tunde Oyeneyin Opens Up About Childhood Colourism

"I Almost Bathed in Boiling Bleach" – Fitness Instructor Tunde Oyeneyin Opens Up About Childhood Colourism

Speaking on the Making Space with Hoda Kotb podcast, Oyeneyin recalled being in fifth or sixth grade when a boy's friend told her that the boy thought she was pretty but would never date her because her skin was "so dark."

The comment, which was delivered by someone who shared her complexion, deeply affected her and left her feeling rejected and ashamed of her appearance.

"I think that was probably maybe halfway through the school day, and I remember the whole day knowing that I needed to release and cry," she recalled . The incident stayed with her for years, shaping her perception of herself and her worth.

Oyeneyin revealed that the pain of the experience stayed with her for years, and she contemplated drastic measures to change her skin colour.

"I came home that day and I thought about bathing myself in boiling hot bleach," she admitted, highlighting the extreme lengths to which colourism can push young people.

Her story sheds light on the damaging effects of colourism, a form of discrimination that privileges lighter skin tones and often leaves those with darker complexions feeling inferior or unwanted, a reality that is especially prevalent in many African and diaspora communities.

The fitness instructor's journey toward self-acceptance was long and difficult, but she eventually learned to embrace her skin and her identity.

She credited her family and her faith for helping her overcome the trauma, and she now uses her platform to inspire others to love themselves unconditionally.

Her story has resonated with many who have experienced similar struggles with colourism, and her openness has helped to shine a light on an issue that is often overlooked in conversations about race and identity, as she continues to advocate for self-love and acceptance.

Oyeneyin's experience serves as a powerful reminder of the harmful effects of colourism and the importance of fostering self-love and acceptance in young people.

Her willingness to share her story has inspired countless others to embrace their own identities and to reject the toxic standards of beauty that society often imposes, as she continues to use her platform to uplift and empower others.
