“I Paved the Way for Him” - Singer Sky B Says Burna Boy Should Be Supporting Him Financially
Nigerian singer Sky B sparks controversy after claiming that Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy owes part of his success to artists like him who laid the foundation for the new generation of musicians. The singer lamented that despite his contributions to the industry, he has not received any financial support from Burna Boy and other successful artists who followed in the footsteps of pioneers like himself.
Speaking on the KAA Truth podcast, SkyB said he played a key role in promoting the Port Harcourt music scene and supported several artistes, including Mr. 2Kay and Timaya, during his active years. He argued that veteran and older artists who helped shape Nigeria’s music industry deserve recognition and support from those currently enjoying global success. According to him, Burna Boy is among the artists who benefited from the groundwork laid by his generation, adding that he expected some form of assistance or appreciation.
Sky B became a household name in the late 2000s with songs such as “Pray for Me” and “Ma Bebe,” earning a large fan base before stepping away from the spotlight. Over the years, many fans have described him as one of the artists who helped popularize contemporary Nigerian pop music during its formative years.
His comments have since divided opinion online. While some Nigerians sympathized with his struggles and agreed that music veterans deserve more support and respect, others argued that no artist is financially responsible for another person’s career simply because they came before them. Many also pointed out that influence and inspiration do not automatically create an obligation for financial assistance.
