Lagos Socialite Ariket Jailed for 15 Years Over Cocaine Trafficking Scheme Linked to Saudi Arabia
Lagos-based socialite, Funmilola Arike Ogbuaya, popularly known as "Ariket," has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after a Federal High Court found her guilty of participating in an international cocaine trafficking network with links to Saudi Arabia.
The conviction followed months of investigations and prosecution by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which accused Ariket of playing a key role in a drug-smuggling operation intended to move cocaine from Nigeria to the Middle East. According to prosecutors, the operation was uncovered after intelligence exposed a trafficking route allegedly which was to be used in the transport of 1.595kg of cocaine to Saudi Arabia through international travel channels. The court heard that investigators uncovered evidence that linked the defendant to the trafficking conspiracy, which led to her arrest and eventual prosecution.
The trial judge ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Ariket to 15 years' imprisonment. Her associate, Odeyemi Omolara, was tried in the same case and has received a 25-year prison sentence.
The court noted that drug trafficking remains a serious threat to society and stressed the need for stiff penalties to discourage others from engaging in similar criminal activities. The case has generated significant attention on social media because Ariket was known in Lagos social circles before her arrest. The latest conviction serves as another reminder of the severe legal consequences attached to drug trafficking, particularly offences involving international drug distribution networks.
As reactions continue to pour in, many observers see the case as another milestone in the country’s campaign against illicit drug trafficking and organized crime.
