“Landlords Will Increase Rent and Call It a Premium Ocean-View Apartment” - Basketmouth Mocks Lagos Flooding and Housing Crisis

In his recent Instagram Story, Basketmouth joked that flooding in Lagos has become so common that homeowners could suddenly find themselves living on “beachfront property.”

He wrote:

“Lagos is the only city where your house can become a beachfront property overnight.”

He then took another jab at the city’s expensive rental market, adding:

“Watch landlords increase the rent and call it a premium ocean-view apartment.”

The post quickly made the rounds on social media, drawing thousands of reactions from Nigerians who found the humor both funny and painfully relatable.

Though the post was intended as satire, it reflects growing concerns over the impact of seasonal flooding in Lagos.

The heavy Lagos rainfall has once again left several parts of the city waterlogged, disrupting movement, damaging homes and businesses, and leaving many residents stranded. The state government has repeatedly urged residents to clear drainage channels and avoid dumping refuse in drainages, while also introducing measures such as a flood-risk insurance scheme to help vulnerable communities.  

Basketmouth’s post sparked widespread reactions online, with many users joking that landlords might indeed market flooded properties as luxury apartments very soon. Others, however, said the joke highlighted serious issues surrounding the drainage issues and the rising cost of accommodation in Lagos. Basketmouth’s witty remarks may have been delivered as comedy, but they struck a chord with many Nigerians because that beneath the jokes lies a real conversation about the affordability of housing in one of Africa’s busiest cities.
