Alaafin, or 'Man of the Palace' in the Yoruba language, was the title of the king of the great Oyo Empire of Oyo state. It was retained through the fall of that state as the official title of the ceremonial ruler of the contemporary natives of Oyo, Nigeria.
The Alaafin has been ranked as the second strongest king in Nigeria, after the Emir of Kano state.

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi II Adeniran, was once deposed and exiled in 1954 for sympathizing with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC). He had come into conflict with Bode Thomas, deputy leader of the Action Group.
The current Alaafin of Oyo is Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III. He ascended the throne in 1970 after he succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II.

He is a lover of the boxing sport, as he was a boxer before ascending the throne of his Fathers.
