"Messi Was Born to Play Football, Ronaldo Is Just a Goal Scorer" – Jay-Jay Okocha Settles GOAT Debate

Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has weighed in on the greatest footballer debate, picking Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the Argentine as a player born to play football while viewing the Portuguese star primarily as a goal scorer.

"Messi Was Born to Play Football, Ronaldo Is Just a Goal Scorer" – Jay-Jay Okocha Settles GOAT Debate

Okocha, who is widely regarded as one of the most gifted players to ever come out of Africa, made his stance clear during an appearance on The Big One Podcast.

He acknowledged Ronaldo's exceptional goalscoring ability but argued that the Portuguese icon's game is built around that one singular skill. "Ronaldo is a special player.

But he's for me a goal scorer. He can score 10 million goals. He is a goal scorer. It's like Haaland. Haaland is a goal scorer," Okocha said. His comparison of Ronaldo to Erling Haaland, who is also renowned for his clinical finishing, suggests that Okocha views Ronaldo as a specialist rather than a complete footballer.

In contrast, Okocha was unequivocal in his praise for Lionel Messi, describing the Argentine as a player operating on a completely different level. "Messi was born to play football," Okocha stated, implying that the Inter Miami star's talent is more innate and holistic.

The former Super Eagles captain's comments highlight the enduring debate between those who favour Ronaldo's athleticism and work rate and those who prefer Messi's natural flair and dribbling ability.

Okocha's opinion carries significant weight in the African football community, given his legendary status and his reputation as a player who himself relied on flair and creativity.

The debate over Messi and Ronaldo has raged for nearly two decades, dividing fans and pundits across the world. While Ronaldo's supporters point to his record-breaking goalscoring numbers and his Champions League titles, Messi's admirers highlight his Ballon d'Or tally and his ability to make the game look effortless.

Okocha's comparison of Ronaldo to Haaland is particularly telling, as it frames Ronaldo as a player who has mastered one aspect of the game to an extraordinary degree, rather than someone who possesses the all-round genius of Messi, who can create, assist, and score with equal brilliance.

Okocha's comments have sparked fresh conversations online, with fans debating whether his assessment of Ronaldo is fair. Some have argued that the Portuguese star's achievements at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus speak for themselves and cannot be reduced to just goalscoring.

However, others have agreed with Okocha, pointing out that Messi's playmaking abilities and dribbling skills set him apart. As the GOAT debate continues to evolve, Okocha's perspective adds a unique African voice to the global conversation, reminding fans that football is about more than just goals.
