Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has weighed in on the greatest footballer debate, picking Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the Argentine as a player born to play football while viewing the Portuguese star primarily as a goal scorer.

But he's for me a goal scorer. He can score 10 million goals. He is a goal scorer. It's like Haaland. Haaland is a goal scorer," Okocha said. His comparison of Ronaldo to Erling Haaland, who is also renowned for his clinical finishing, suggests that Okocha views Ronaldo as a specialist rather than a complete footballer.

In contrast, Okocha was unequivocal in his praise for Lionel Messi, describing the Argentine as a player operating on a completely different level. "Messi was born to play football," Okocha stated, implying that the Inter Miami star's talent is more innate and holistic.

The former Super Eagles captain's comments highlight the enduring debate between those who favour Ronaldo's athleticism and work rate and those who prefer Messi's natural flair and dribbling ability.

Okocha's opinion carries significant weight in the African football community, given his legendary status and his reputation as a player who himself relied on flair and creativity.
