“My Cinema Movie Grossed N103m, But I Only Made N22m” - Omotola Reveals Reality Behind Box-Office Figures

Nollywood star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has sparked conversation after revealing that a movie that grossed N103 million at the cinema reportedly earned her just N22 million.

Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has sparked conversation after revealing that a movie of hers generated over 103 million Naira at the cinema, yet she received only 22 million from the earnings.

The veteran actress made the revelation while speaking about the realities of making and distributing films in Nigeria, highlighting the huge difference between a movie’s reported box-office gross and what actually gets back to the filmmaker.

According to Omotola, although the movie pulled in an impressive 103 million Naira at the cinema, the amount that ultimately came to her was just N22 million.

Her revelation has got Nigerians asking a simple question: Where did the remaining money go?

For many moviegoers, seeing a film reported as a N100 million-plus box-office success naturally creates the impression that the filmmakers have made a fortune.

But Omotola’s experience paints a different picture.

Cinema earnings are not simply handed over to the producer after a movie makes sales. The revenue generated from ticket sales is shared among different parties involved in the exhibition and distribution process.

This means that a movie can record a huge gross figure while the actual amount received by its producer or filmmaker is considerably lower.

Omotola’s figures have therefore opened another conversation about how Nigeria’s cinema business works and how much filmmakers actually take home after a successful theatrical run.

The actress’s revelation also highlights one of the challenges facing filmmakers in Nigeria. A movie can attract thousands of viewers, dominate conversations and appear to be a massive commercial success, while the people who invested in producing it may receive only a fraction of the reported box-office figure.

And now, her revelation has Nigerians looking beyond the headline figures and asking what filmmakers really earn when their movies become cinema hits.

N103 million sounds massive but according to Omotola, the reality behind that number can look very different.
