Nigerians Call for Boycott of Tyla’s Lagos Concert Over Renewed Xenophobia Outrage

South African music star Tyla is facing growing calls for a boycott of her scheduled Lagos concert, as many Nigerians express outrage over renewed reports of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa.

The Grammy-winning singer recently announced Lagos as one of the stops on her upcoming world tour. However, the announcement has since sparked heated reactions online, with some Nigerians arguing that the concert should not happen while fellow citizens continue to face alleged attacks in South Africa. 

On social media, several users has urged Nigerians to boycott the event, insisting that supporting the concert would send the wrong message at a time when concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa have once again taken centre stage. Arguing that the issue goes beyond music, describing it as a matter of solidarity with victims of xenophobic violence.

Others, however, have defended Tyla, pointing out that she is just an entertainer and should not be held personally responsible for the actions of individuals involved in xenophobic violence or for broader political issues between the two countries.

Tyla has not publicly responded to the boycott campaign, and there has been no indication that her Lagos concert has been cancelled or postponed.

As the conversation continues to gain momentum, the controversy has once again brought renewed attention to the long-standing issue of xenophobic attacks in South Africa and their impact on relations between Nigerians and South Africans.
