Skepta Responds to Backlash From Burna Boy Fans After Speaking Out on Nigeria’s Insecurity

The controversy began after Skepta shared a passionate message calling for more global attention to the insecurity and social challenges affecting Nigeria. The rapper had earlier participated in the End SARS protests, and, reflecting on it, said it still feels like there is “so much injustice” in the country and urged people around the world to continue speaking up for Nigerians.  

In the viral post, Skepta stated that Nigerians need support and advocacy, and that he would continue to use his platform to speak out against injustice whenever possible. Following the post, some social media users reportedly criticised Skepta, questioning why he was speaking so strongly about Nigeria’s issues. In response, the rapper appeared unbothered by the backlash and replied that;

“I am a British, Nigerian, yes, but I've always cared about Nigeria, and anybody who has followed my career can vouch for that. Why should I not speak up about what is happening in my homeland?”

Many Nigerians have praised Skepta for using his international platform to spotlight the country’s struggles. Despite the criticism, Skepta appears determined to keep speaking on issues affecting Nigerians, insisting that conversations about insecurity and injustice are too important to be silenced by fan rivalries or online backlash.
