South Africa Begins Deportation Proceedings Against Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina
Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, is back in the spotlight as South African authorities begin legal proceedings that could see the beauty queen deported over allegations concerning her immigration status.
The Department of Home Affairs has said that Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, is living in the country without legal status and could be deported from South Africa.
The 25-year-old beauty queen was in the Cape Town Regional Court on June 9 following her arrest in the Summer Greens area. She was released on warning but is expected to return to court July 16 as immigration officials continue legal proceedings to have her deported. Court documents reveal that immigration officer Adrian Jackson told the court that officials had located Adetshina and her minor son during an investigation and established that neither has valid legal documentation to stay in South Africa at present.
Jackson stated that after interviewing Adetshina and reviewing the Department of Home Affairs’ records, authorities concluded that she has no lawful residential status in the country and subsequently requested the court to confirm her detention for deportation.
This follows an earlier move by Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber who in March rejected Adetshina’s application for a review of the decision not to issue her with a letter of good cause.
Chidinma was told in September 2024 that the government planned to cancel her and her son's identity documents, but the minister said she did not respond to the notice.
Schreiber also said she had obtained a Nigerian passport, and then applied for a South African visitor’s visa, which sources say was turned down after officials said she had provided a fake bank statement. He also alleged that Adetshina later re-entered South Africa through the Lebombo border from Mozambique while presenting herself as a South African citizen.
As part of the conditions attached to her release, Adetshina has been ordered to remain at the address where she was arrested and must notify immigration authorities of any changes to her residence, employment, or movements while the case is ongoing.
The development has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians and South Africans closely following the case. The matter remains before the court, and no final determination has yet been made regarding Adetshina’s immigration status or the proposed deportation.
