“There Is a Problem in Igboland” - Gina Onuoha Speaks Out Against Domestic Violence and Child Abuse
Veteran Nollywood actress Gina Onuoha has raised alarm over the growing culture of domestic violence and child abuse within some Igbo communities, calling for urgent action from leaders across the South-East.
In an emotional video message shared online, the actress revealed that she had spent days watching disturbing videos and images circulating on social media, many of which allegedly showed cases of women being assaulted by their partners and children being abused by those entrusted with their care.
She said
“There is a problem in Igboland,”
The actress took particular aim at men who use their financial status or role as providers to justify mistreating their wives and partners. According to her, wealth alone does not define a true man.
“Money doesn’t make you an Odogwu,” she said, stressing that genuine masculinity is reflected in one’s character, integrity, respect, and responsibility not violence.
Onuoha also condemned women who channel frustrations from troubled marriages or personal struggles onto vulnerable children, especially young domestic helpers. She described such acts as cruel and unacceptable, while calling for stronger measures to curb the practice of sending underage children to live with relatives or strangers as house helps. The actress urged governors, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to begin addressing the issue through town hall meetings, public awareness campaigns, and community discussions.
While acknowledging that many Igbo men and women are responsible, hardworking, and compassionate, Onuoha insisted that the increasing number of reported abuse cases should not be ignored.
