“We Can’t Abandon Our Jobs” — Dayo Amusa Fires Back at Nigerians Bullying Celebrities Over Silence on Insecurity
Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has sparked intense reactions after defending entertainers against the growing pressure to speak on national issues constantly. In a strongly worded social media post, the actress criticised what she described as the bullying and unrealistic expectations many Nigerians place on celebrities whenever crises occur in the country. Amusa argued that actors, musicians, and other creatives should not be expected to abandon their careers and spend every day posting about kidnappings, insecurity, and government failures just to satisfy critics online. Referring to the realities of the entertainment industry, she noted that many creatives take out high-interest loans to fund projects and still have to work to survive.
The lines that really triggered fans from her post were:
“You want us to suspend our jobs and be posting videos of kidnapping and cursing the government daily, while you’re in your own office tweeting.”
She also lamented what she called the toxic culture of online attacks, saying celebrities are often labelled insensitive simply because they continue to promote their work during difficult national moments. According to her, many of those criticising public figures are not making similar sacrifices in their own professions.
Despite her criticism of online mobs, Amusa expressed sympathy for the victims of the recent Oyo State school abduction, offering prayers for the safe return of the kidnapped students and teachers. Her comments have since divided social media users. While some agree that celebrities are unfairly targeted and cannot be expected to solve national problems, others insist that public figures have a responsibility to use their platforms to amplify important issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
The debate adds to the ongoing conversation about the role of celebrities in activism, especially when insecurity and governance concerns remain major topics across the country.
