“You Want Us to Sell Kuli Kuli?” - DJ Switch Slams Remi Tinubu Over Economic Empowerment Remarks
Popular DJ and activist DJ Switch has reacted strongly to recent remarks made by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, regarding her office’s efforts to support vulnerable Nigerians through economic empowerment programmes.
Speaking at an event, the First Lady said her office has continued to provide grants, healthcare system, and skills support to help citizens become more independent amid the country’s economic hardship. She explained that beneficiaries have received grants to establish small businesses, including ventures such as akara frying, corn roasting, and kuli-kuli production, emphasizing that the funds were intended to encourage entrepreneurship so as to avoid long-term dependence on government assistance.
However, DJ Switch was unimpressed by her statement. Reacting on her Instagram Story, the outspoken activist questioned whether encouraging Nigerians to engage in small-scale trading was an adequate response to the country’s economic realities.
In a strongly worded post, she wrote:
“With absolute no due respect, Remi! Thunder fire you! While other nations are creating spaces and infrastructure to develop their people for this rapidly technologically advancing world, you want us to sell kuli kuli? And the lot behind you are nodding their greedy necks!”
She argued that governments around the world are investing in innovation, technology, education, and infrastructure to prepare citizens for the future, while Nigeria, according to Remi, should be focusing on small businesses to sustain themselves.
DJ Switch’s comments quickly gained attention online, dividing public opinion. The exchange has reignited discussions about the role of government empowerment programmes, with many questioning whether they should focus primarily on small-scale entrepreneurship or place greater emphasis on creating large-scale employment opportunities and strengthening the economy.
As reactions continue to pour in, DJ Switch comments highlight the growing public concern over Nigeria’s economic direction and the best strategies for lifting millions of citizens out of poverty.
“To start Akara business doesn't take a lot of money. To start roasting corn and kuli-kuli doesn't take much. We didn't give them a loan, we gave them a grant. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could.”
