Airlines Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Soaring Fuel Prices — Flights May Halt Thursday

Nigeria’s aviation sector is on the brink of disruption as airlines warn they may shut down operations nationwide over skyrocketing fuel costs, leaving thousands of passengers uncertain about their travel plans.

Airlines Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Soaring Fuel Prices - Flights May Halt Thursday

Tension is rising across Nigeria’s aviation industry as the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has announced plans for a possible nationwide shutdown of flight operations starting Thursday. They cited unbearable increases in fuel prices as the reason. The development has sparked concern among travelers and businesses with fears that the country could face one of its biggest air travel disruptions in recent years.

At the center of the crisis is the sharp rise in the cost of Jet A1 (aviation fuel), which has surged dramatically in recent months. Industry sources say fuel prices have jumped from around 900 Naira per litre to as high as 3,500 Naira per litre.

“We Can’t Continue Like This”

Airlines have made it clear that without urgent intervention, they may have no option but to suspend operations. According to the AON, several carriers are already struggling to stay afloat, with some reportedly flying just to cover fuel expenses. Efforts to resolve the issue through discussions with the government and fuel suppliers have so far failed to produce a lasting solution.

Authorities have held emergency meetings and introduced measures such as partial reductions in aviation-related charges. However, industry players insist that these steps do little to address the core issue, the skyrocketing cost of fuel. Until that is resolved, the threat of a shutdown remains very real.

This is not the first time airlines have raised alarm over fuel costs, but the tone this time is noticeably more urgent. Previous shutdown threats were avoided at the last minute, but industry observers warn that this time, the situation may be harder to contain.

As Thursday approaches, all eyes are on the government, fuel suppliers, and airline operators to find a solution.
