Relief for Millions as Court Orders MTN and Airtel to Restore “Borrow Airtime” Services

Relief across the country as Nigerian courts order major telecom providers MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria to immediately restore their popular airtime and data lending services. The ruling follows the recent suspension of “borrow airtime” features, which left many subscribers stranded and unable to stay connected during emergencies.

The sudden halt of airtime and data credit services was linked to new regulatory directives from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The commission had introduced stricter rules around digital lending, requiring telecom operators to comply with new licensing and guidelines. Now courts have intervened, ruling that the actions leading to the suspension were not properly aligned with existing telecom regulations and directed that airtime and data lending services be restored immediately  

The court’s ruling has brought normalcy, at least temporarily, in favor of restoring services while broader issues are sorted out.

Although the order has been given, the situation is still evolving. There are indications that full restoration may take time and discussions between regulators and telecom operators are still ongoing.

For now, it’s a win for everyday Nigerians. As MTN and Airtel move to restore services, millions can once again rely on the system.
