Peter Obi has once again turned up the heat on President Bola Tinubu, this time over the federal government's approach to borrowing. The former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party chieftain did not hold back in his latest assessment of the country's economic direction. According to Obi, the current administration is digging a hole that future generations will struggle to climb out of. He argued that borrowing without a corresponding focus on revenue generation and fiscal discipline is not just irresponsible, it is dangerous.

Obi's central argument is straightforward. You do not borrow your way out of a crisis caused by poor earnings. First, you fix the leakages. You block the channels through which public funds disappear. You reduce the cost of governance. You create an environment where businesses can thrive and pay taxes. Then, and only then, do you consider taking loans for strategic infrastructure projects.

The timing of his criticism is significant. Recent reports have shown that Nigeria now spends more than ninety percent of its government revenue on debt servicing alone. That leaves very little for healthcare, education, roads, or any of the basic functions that citizens expect their government to provide. When almost every naira collected goes straight back out to pay lenders, something has gone terribly wrong.

Supporters of the president have pushed back, arguing that the previous administration also borrowed heavily and that Tinubu inherited a difficult situation. They point to ongoing reforms as necessary pain that will eventually lead to stability. But Obi and his supporters are not buying it. They argue that continuing the same pattern of borrowing without structural change is simply repeating mistakes and expecting different results.

Beyond the political back-and-forth, the borrowing debate touches on something deeper. It raises the question of what kind of country Nigeria is building for the future. If every generation keeps borrowing to pay for the excesses and inefficiencies of the previous one, when does the cycle stop? Peter Obi may not have all the answers, but he is forcing the question onto the table. And in Nigerian politics, that alone is worth something.
