If Your Partner Can't Share Their Phone Password, Don't Marry Them – Pastor Dolapo Lawal

If Your Partner Can't Share Their Phone Password, Don't Marry Them – Pastor Dolapo Lawal

Pastor Dolapo Lawal has advised singles to demand full access to their partner's phone passwords before marriage, saying any relationship without transparency is not real.

If Your Partner Can't Share Their Phone Password, Don't Marry Them – Pastor Dolapo Lawal

Pastor Dolapo Lawal has done it again, another hot take that has Nigerians either nodding in agreement or rolling their eyes into another dimension. This time, the clergyman is talking about phone passwords and transparency in relationships, and his message is simple but controversial. If your partner cannot share their phone passwords with you, don't marry them. End of discussion.

In a now-viral message, Lawal advised singles to test their partner's openness by asking for unrestricted access to their personal accounts. He said it emphatically, "If you want to marry somebody, ask them, 'Can I know your password to everything that you have?' If they say no, leave them. Let them be going their own way o."

His argument is rooted in the idea that marriage without transparency is not really marriage. He questioned the logic of being physically vulnerable with someone, seeing each other naked, sharing a bed, having children, while being completely closed off emotionally and digitally. What are we even doing at that point? That's not marriage, that's just two people playing house.

Reactions have been flying in from every direction. Some people completely agree with him. They say in this digital age, secrecy on phones is a major red flag. If you're hiding your messages, your calls, your social media DMs, what exactly are you hiding? And why should anyone marry someone who has something to hide?

Others are calling Lawal controlling and toxic. They argue that everyone is entitled to privacy, even in marriage. Wanting your own space and not sharing every single password does not mean you're cheating or hiding something, it just means you value boundaries. They say a relationship built on surveillance is not a healthy one, and if you need to check your partner's phone to feel secure, the problem is you, not them.

Pastor Dolapo is clearly on the side of full transparency, no exceptions. Whether you agree or disagree, his message has opened up an important conversation about trust, privacy, and what marriage should look like in the age of smartphones. There's no right or wrong answer, but every couple has to figure out what works for them.
