Anger over the rising cost of data subscriptions in Nigeria boils over in Abuja, where a group of protesters gathered outside MTN, demanding lower data prices and improved network services.
The protest drew attention both on the streets and across social media, with demonstrators accusing telecom companies of charging excessively while delivering poor service quality. The protest grounds were filled with Placards, chants, and emotional testimonies from subscribers highlighting the frustration many Nigerians feel about the state of data access in the country.
The popular activist, Omoyele Sowore who lead protest emotionally declared:
“There’s nowhere in the world where data is as expensive as in Nigeria.”
Mama P, also captured attention online after sharing her personal struggle with data costs:
“I will implore every Nigerian to join this struggle because it affects our daily lives. How can I pay N11,000 for data every two days? I’ve shown everyone here the receipt, this is fraud.”
The protest reflects wider public frustration over Nigeria’s rising cost of living, and the large amounts on internet subscriptions despite dealing with unstable connections, poor speeds, and rapid data depletion.
While telecom operators continue to face challenges they claim is linked to inflation and operational costs, many subscribers insist that the burden placed on consumers has become unbearable. Now Nigerians are demanding that they must provide affordable internet access and better telecom services.
