Former Power Minister Saleh Mamman Convicted Over N33.8 Billion Money Laundering

A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, on charges of money laundering involving about N33.8 billion.

Former Power Minister Saleh Mamman Convicted Over N33.8 Billion Money Laundering

Another former Nigerian big shot has been convicted. This time, it's Saleh Mamman, who served as Minister of Power under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty of money laundering charges involving a staggering N33.8 billion. Mamman was accused of diverting funds meant for power sector projects during his time in office. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been on his case for a while, and now they have finally secured a conviction. The court ruled that the evidence against him was overwhelming, and he has been found guilty as charged.

This conviction is significant for a few reasons. First, the amount is huge and N33.8 billion is not pocket change. That's money that could have been used to improve Nigeria's embarrassing power situation, the same situation where citizens spend their hard-earned money on fuel for generators because the national grid keeps collapsing.

Second, it sends a message. The EFCC under the current administration has been going after some of the big names from the previous government. Mamman is now on the list of convicted former officials, and Nigerians are watching to see who is next.

Reactions have poured in since the news broke. Some Nigerians are celebrating, saying it's about time these people face justice. Others are skeptical, asking if Mamman will actually serve his sentence or if he will somehow escape like many corrupt officials have done in the past. A few are pointing out that while one minister is being convicted, many others continue to walk free, enjoying the money they stole.

Mamman's sentencing is expected to happen soon. The court has not yet announced how many years he will spend behind bars or what fine he will pay. But one thing is certain, his political career is finished, and his name will now be mentioned alongside other convicted Nigerian politicians who thought they could steal and get away with it.

For ordinary Nigerians, this conviction is small comfort. The money is probably already gone, spent or hidden in accounts nobody can trace. But watching a former minister being led to prison at least gives a little hope that someday, maybe, the system will work.
