The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir (Eid-ul-Adha) celebration across the country.

The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Interior, on behalf of the government, as Muslims across Nigeria prepare to celebrate one of Islam’s most significant religious festivals. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The government used the medium to congratulate Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging them to reflect on the values of sacrifice, obedience, faith, and compassion, the main purpose of Eid-ul-Adha.
The government also encouraged Nigerians of all faiths to use the holiday period to pray for peace, unity, and national progress, emphasizing that the administration remains committed to improving the country’s economic and security conditions.
With two days declared work-free nationwide, many Nigerians are expected to travel, celebrate with loved ones, and participate in prayers and festivities as the country marks one of its biggest religious holidays of the year.
