Fuel Subsidy Removal Saved Nigeria From Bankruptcy – President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration's economic reforms, stating that the removal of fuel subsidy helped save Nigeria from financial collapse.

Fuel Subsidy Removal Saved Nigeria From Bankruptcy – President Tinubu

President Tinubu is not backing down from his decision to remove fuel subsidy, no matter how much Nigerians complain about the hardship that followed. Speaking during a meeting with governors and party stakeholders, the President argued that the removal saved Nigeria from bankruptcy and set the country on a path to economic recovery. He acknowledged that the period was "very, very challenging" and "tough," but he insisted that the alternative would have been worse – a total financial collapse that would have left the country in ruins and unable to pay salaries or fund basic services.

He praised those who stood by him during the process, saying many party members remained loyal despite facing criticism, litigation, and accusations from opponents who wanted to see him fail. "Instead of dodging the bullets, I took it," he said, framing himself as a leader willing to take the heat for decisions that would benefit the country in the long run. His words suggest that he sees himself as a reformer who made an unpopular choice because it was the right one, not because it would win him votes or make him popular on social media.

The online space has been divided since his comments went viral, with Nigerians arguing passionately on both sides of the issue. Some Nigerians agree that the subsidy was unsustainable and that something had to be done, even if the transition has been painful for ordinary people. They argue that previous governments kept kicking the can down the road, afraid of public backlash, and Tinubu finally did what needed to be done even knowing it would cost him politically. Others are furious, pointing to the skyrocketing cost of living, the transportation crisis that has left many people stranded, and the fact that many families can no longer afford three square meals a day.

Critics have also questioned whether the savings from subsidy removal have actually been used to benefit Nigerians or if the money has simply disappeared into the same corrupt pockets that have always drained the country's resources. They point to the lack of visible infrastructure projects, the continued decay of public schools and hospitals, and the fact that palliative distributions have been chaotic and poorly managed. Tinubu did not address those allegations directly during his speech, but his message was clear, the reforms were necessary, the worst is over, and Nigeria is now witnessing positive results that will become more visible over time.

Whether Nigerians will ever feel those positive results in their daily lives remains to be seen, and the President seems to be asking for patience from a populace that has very little left to give. For now, Tinubu is standing by his decision, and he is asking Nigerians to trust that the pain of today will lead to the prosperity of tomorrow. That is a hard sell when people are struggling to eat, but the President has made his case and he is not apologizing.
