There Is So Much Injustice in Nigeria, We Need People to Speak Up for Us – British-Nigerian Rapper Skepta Cries Out

There Is So Much Injustice in Nigeria, We Need People to Speak Up for Us – British-Nigerian Rapper Skepta Cries Out

Skepta is known for his cool demeanor and his hit songs, but this time he is using his voice for something far more serious than music. The British-Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Joseph Adenuga, took to social media to share a video in which he expressed deep concern about the level of injustice he is seeing in Nigeria. He did not hold back, calling the situation worsening and urging fellow entertainers, celebrities, and the international community to pay attention and help amplify what is happening.

His words have struck a chord because Skepta is not someone who speaks lightly on such matters. He has spent much of his career focused on music, fashion, and his personal brand, rarely venturing into political commentary. So when he speaks, people listen. He noted that Nigerians are widely known for their resilience and their ability to keep smiling even in difficult times, but he argued that resilience should not be an excuse for tolerating persistent injustice. He wants the world to see what Nigerians are going through, and he wants celebrities both at home and abroad to use their platforms to demand change.

The online space has been reacting strongly to Skepta's video. Many Nigerians have thanked him for speaking up, saying that the country needs more influential voices like his to amplify the struggles of ordinary citizens. They pointed to issues like police brutality, extrajudicial killings, banditry, kidnapping, and economic hardship as examples of the injustice Skepta is talking about. Some said that foreign-based celebrities often forget where they came from, so it is refreshing to see someone like Skepta still paying attention to Nigeria's problems.

Others have criticized Skepta for speaking from a distance, arguing that he lives comfortably in the United Kingdom and does not experience the injustice he is crying about. They say that while his words are appreciated, they would carry more weight if he was on the ground, organizing, funding, or participating in protests. A few have also pointed out that Skepta has not mentioned specific incidents or named names, making his statement powerful but somewhat vague.

Skepta has not responded to the criticism, but his video has already achieved what he likely wanted, it has started a conversation. Whether that conversation leads to any concrete action remains to be seen, but the rapper has added his voice to the growing chorus of people demanding justice in Nigeria. For a country that often feels ignored by the world, having a global star like Skepta speak up is no small thing.
