Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he has been living with diabetes for more than four decades, stressing that chronic illnesses can be effectively managed through discipline.

I Rely on Diet, Exercise and Adequate Rest – Ex-President Obasanjo Opens Up on Managing Diabetes for Over 40 Years

Obasanjo shared his health journey during an interview on AIT News, and his message was one of hope for millions of Nigerians living with diabetes. He said, "Most diseases that are not curable are manageable. I have a disease that is not curable yet, and that's diabetes." He explained that he has successfully managed the condition for over 40 years by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, proper dieting, and adequate rest. His disclosure is significant because diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in Nigeria, and many people struggle to manage it effectively.

The former President's openness has been praised by many Nigerians who see him as an example of how to live with a chronic condition without letting it destroy your quality of life. At 88 years old, Obasanjo remains active, traveling internationally, speaking at events, and even engaging in physical activities like walking and jogging. His longevity and vitality are a testament to the power of discipline and proper medical care. Some have noted that not everyone has access to the same level of healthcare and nutrition that a former president enjoys, but his message about discipline still applies.

Obasanjo did not go into details about his specific diet or exercise routine, but he emphasized that consistency is key. He said that many people give up on managing their health because they expect quick results, but managing a chronic illness is a lifelong commitment. He also advised Nigerians to go for regular checkups so they can catch illnesses early before they become more difficult to treat.

The former President's revelation has also sparked conversations about diabetes awareness in Nigeria. Many people live with the condition without knowing it, and by the time they are diagnosed, complications have already set in. Obasanjo's story is a reminder that diabetes is not a death sentence and that with the right lifestyle, people can live long, productive lives despite the diagnosis.
