“I Make More at Home” - Shatta Wale Explains Why He Doesn’t Chase International Shows Like Burna Boy and Davido

While many African music stars dream of selling out arenas across Europe and America, Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale says he’s not interested in chasing international shows for validation. The outspoken singer recently explained why he prefers focusing on his home market, claiming that he earns up to $1 million per show in Ghana and doesn’t need overseas gigs to prove his success.

“I Make More at Home” - Shatta Wale Explains Why He Doesn’t Chase International Shows Like Burna Boy and Davido

Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has recently explained why he is not obsessed with chasing international concert appearances the way artists such as Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid often do.

According to Shatta Wale, many African artists accept relatively low-paying overseas gigs simply for the prestige of saying they performed abroad. He argued that performing internationally does not automatically make someone a bigger artist and that he prefers deals that reflect the value of his brand. He has previously criticized artists who travel overseas for shows worth only a few thousand dollars, saying he would rather stay in Ghana than accept what he considers underpriced bookings.

The singer said he makes about $1 million from shows and related appearances in Ghana, saying he can make a lot of money without always touring abroad. He also shot down critics who dismiss him as a “local champion”, arguing that international recognition is not measured simply by how often an artist works overseas. He said his collaboration with Beyoncé on the song “Already” confirmed he had influence beyond Ghana.

Shatta Wale’s comments make one wonder whether an artist like him who has successfully built a profitable local market should be pressured to follow the same career path as Nigerian stars or whether his earnings and international influence truly compare to those of globally touring acts like Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid.
