The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of legendary actor, dramatist, and scholar Dr. Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.

Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor and Theatre Icon Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Veteran Nollywood actor Dr. Kola Oyewo has died at the age of 80, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned for over six decades. His death was announced on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who paid an emotional tribute to the late icon on social media. Sharing the heartbreaking news, Afod wrote:

Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before becoming one of the most respected figures in Nigerian theatre. He earned widespread acclaim for his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance regarded as one of the defining moments in Nigerian stage history. Beyond the screen and stage, Dr. Oyewo was equally respected in academia. A holder of a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Ibadan, he lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and later Elizade University, where he mentored countless students and emerging performers.

Ironically, the veteran actor had celebrated his 80th birthday just a few months ago, receiving tributes from across the country, including a congratulatory message from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling. News of his passing has since sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with actors, filmmakers, students, and fans remembering him as a gifted performer, dedicated teacher, and cultural icon whose work inspired generations.

As tributes continue to pour in, one thing remains certain: although Dr. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow, the characters he brought to life, the students he mentored, and the legacy he built will continue to live on in Nigerian theatre and cinema for years to come.
