“Euracare Has Robbed Me Even of the Peace to Mourn My Son” - Chimamanda Adichie Breaks Silence, Demands Justice Over Toddler’s Death

Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie breaks silence since the tragic death of her 21-month-old son, accusing Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital of negligence, intimidation, and attempting to frustrate her family’s search for answers.

Celebrated Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has broken her silence over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi. She has shared a heartbreaking account of the grief while accusing Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital of negligence and obstructing her family’s pursuit of justice.

In a lengthy statement released on her social media platforms, Adichie described waking up every morning struggling to accept the loss of her son.

I wake up every single morning with my heart racing… I long for, at least, peace to mourn, but Euracare Hospital has robbed me even of that,” she wrote.

The best-selling author claimed her son suffered a hypoxic brain injury due to improper sedation during medical procedures at the Lagos hospital. She also accused the hospital of issuing an incorrect death certificate, failing to provide full medical records and attempting to delay or prevent a coroner’s inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.

“These steps have only deepened our family's anguish, not brought clarity,” she says. Adichie said a senior figure associated with the hospital told her not to go to court, saying that court proceedings could damage her reputation. She described the message as “manipulative” and said her family would not be deterred by any amount of pressure or intimidation.

Our quest for justice will continue, she declared, insisting that the search for truth is about understanding how her son died, not simply pursuing compensation.

The Lagos State High Court has temporarily stopped the coroner’s inquest after an application by Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited, and the case has garnered national attention. Euracare has previously expressed its condolences to the family of Adichie, and denied allegations of negligence. The hospital said it was following accepted clinical protocols, launched an internal investigation and would cooperate with regulatory authorities while disputing some of the claims against it. As the legal process continues, many Nigerians have responded emotionally to Adichie’s appeal.

But for the grieving mother, it’s a very personal matter. She says that beyond the legal battle and the spotlight, she is just a parent, still mourning the loss of her child, an unimaginable loss, and she wants to know the truth.
