“My Wife Isn’t the First Person I Open Up To” - Deyemi Okanlawon Opens Up on Why Men Need Support Too

For generations, men have been taught to “be strong,” “man up,” and carry their burdens in silence. But Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon is challenging that narrative with an honest conversation about masculinity, emotional resilience, and the importance of having a support system.

“My Wife Isn’t the First Person I Open Up To” - Deyemi Okanlawon Opens Up on Why Men Need Support Too

Nollywood actor Deyemi Okalanwon has shared his thoughts on masculinity, emotional resilience and the important of a support system.

In a recent interview, the actor shared his perspective on what it means to be a man, explaining that men are naturally wired to endure hardship and protect those around them. According to Deyemi, a man’s instinct is to shield the people he loves, even in dangerous situations.

“My job is to protect the people around me. If gbege happens here now, the chances are I’m going to step in front. It’s what needs to happen, there’s no excuse.”

While acknowledging the expectation for men to remain strong, the actor stressed that emotional strength should not come at the cost of personal well-being.

“You also have to be aware enough to find healing,” he added.

Deyemi revealed that he has intentionally built a dependable support network for life’s most difficult moments. Rather than suffering in silence, he reaches out to trusted professionals and mentors whenever he needs guidance.

“On my speed dial I have people that if I’m going through the worst times that I can talk to. I have a therapist on speed dial, I have my mentors on speed dial.”

One of the most talked-about moments from the interview came when he disclosed that his wife isn’t the first person he turns to during emotional struggles. His reason being that he tries not to place additional pressure on her, knowing she already carries the responsibilities of running her business and caring for their family.

“When the thing is just too hard, there’s my wife. She’s not the first… because she’s dealing with her own business and raising the family.”

His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many praising his honesty about therapy, mentorship, and the importance of men seeking help instead of bottling up their emotions.
