Governor Makinde Told Me Tinubu Has Not Called Him Since Oyo School Abduction – Peter Obi Claims

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has claimed that Governor Seyi Makinde told him President Bola Tinubu has not contacted him once since the abduction of 37 pupils and teachers in Oyo State over 50 days ago.

Governor Makinde Told Me Tinubu Has Not Called Him Since Oyo School Abduction – Peter Obi Claims

Peter Obi has expressed shock over what he described as President Bola Tinubu's failure to reach out to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde following the abduction of schoolchildren in Orire Local Government Area. The former Anambra State governor made the revelation in a Facebook post on Monday, stating that he visited Makinde in Ibadan on July 3 alongside political economist Professor Pat Utomi and was stunned to learn that the President had not placed a single call to the governor since the incident occurred more than 50 days ago.

"But, to my utmost shock, I discovered that, contrary to my assumption that they had been in regular communication over the matter, Governor Seyi Makinde had not received a single call from President Bola Tinubu," Obi wrote.

Obi noted that he had previously spoken publicly about the abduction on two occasions, including appealing directly to the kidnappers to release the children. He also revealed that he had called Makinde twice to express solidarity, stressing that the incident was not merely an Oyo State problem but a national tragedy that demanded a coordinated response from the federal government.

The former governor said the two-hour meeting also provided an opportunity to share his experience in tackling insecurity while serving as governor of Anambra State, a move he said was aimed at offering practical solutions rather than mere criticism.

Drawing a comparison with the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping, Obi recalled that although former President Goodluck Jonathan faced widespread criticism for taking more than two weeks to contact the Borno State governor, the current administration had gone more than seven weeks without similar engagement despite experiencing over 13 school kidnapping incidents under its watch.

He argued that Tinubu was among the prominent critics who demanded Jonathan's resignation over his handling of the Chibok crisis, questioning why the same standard should not apply to the current administration.

"I vividly recall that the current President, Bola Tinubu, led a team of vocal critics who called for President Jonathan's immediate resignation over the incident, citing his delay in calling the state governor," Obi said.
