“I Didn’t Go to School, But I Know More Than Many Graduates” - MC Oluomo Speaks on His Journey to Success

MC Oluomo has sparked fresh conversations online after making a bold statement about education and life experience. Oluomo said he believes practical knowledge has taught him more than many university degrees ever could.

The President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as MC Oluomo, Musiliu Akinsanya, has drawn a lot of reactions after saying his life experience and practical knowledge are far better than that of many university graduates.

The transport union leader, who spoke at the 50th golden jubilee celebration of popular Islamic singer Hafsat Adegoke in Lagos, narrated his humble beginnings and how he got to become one of Nigeria’s influential union figures.

“I never had the opportunity to go to school but from a very young age, I started working and making money and that experience taught me the importance of responsibility, discipline and perseverance,” MC Oluomo said.

According to him, those early struggles laid the foundation for the success he enjoys today. He explained that he rose through the ranks of the transport union by learning the job from the ground up rather than relying on shortcuts.

“That’s what I did until I got to this stage. I didn’t enter the NURTW as a bastard. I learned the work, mastered it, and got to where I am today. I didn’t go to school, but the knowledge and understanding I possess in my head are greater than those held by people with degrees.”

Despite his comments about formal education, MC Oluomo stressed that he has always valued schooling and ensured his children had opportunities he never did. Highlighting their achievements, he proudly revealed that his children have built successful professional careers abroad.

“I used to tell people that if I am uneducated, glory be to God. My children today are a doctor, a lawyer, and an engineer, and they are in America. God should not let our children die an untimely death.”

His remarks have since generated intense debate across social media. While many praised him for emphasizing the importance of experience, resilience, and hard work, others argued that practical knowledge and formal education each play unique roles in personal and professional success.

The comments have reignited discussions about whether life experience can sometimes outweigh academic qualifications, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions on the value of education versus real-world experience.
