"I'm a Hopeless Romantic, Not a Man-Hater" – Toke Makinwa Clarifies After Backlash Over "Man Asking for Money" Comment

"I'm a Hopeless Romantic, Not a Man-Hater" – Toke Makinwa Clarifies After Backlash Over "Man Asking for Money" Comment

Toke Makinwa has found herself at the centre of a social media firestorm after a video clip from the Mentality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Banky W, went viral.

In the podcast, she made several statements about relationships, money, and the "transactional" nature of dating that many viewers interpreted as a blanket dismissal of men.

However, she has since clarified that she is not a man-hater, emphasising that she is a "huge advocate for marriage".

The backlash largely stemmed from her claims that "Nigerian men can't offer more than money in a relationship" and that "relationships have always been transactional".

She also advised women that "dating within your wage" is the key to avoiding financial strain in a relationship.

While some critics labelled her views as materialistic or anti-men, Toke argued that she was simply speaking the truth about modern dating dynamics and the unrealistic expectations that often exist on both sides.

In response to the accusations, Toke took to social media to clarify her stance. "The popular belief out there is that I bash men, I hate men. It's never been the truth, I'm a hopeless romantic," she stated.

She also addressed the misconception that her views reflect a negative outlook on marriage, insisting, "I'm a huge advocate for marriage because 2 is better than 1.

She lamented that the current generation's focus on materialism has eroded emotional connections, noting that "we use people and value things".

Despite the clarification, reactions remain mixed. Some fans agree with her perspective, arguing that she is simply acknowledging a harsh reality of the dating scene, while others maintain that her comments were poorly worded.

Regardless of public opinion, Toke has made it clear that she stands by her views on financial awareness in relationships but firmly rejects the label of a man-hater.
