"God Carved That Niche for Me" – Veteran Actress Patience Ozokwor Explains Why She Always Plays Witch Roles

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has opened up about her long-standing association with witch and villainous roles in Nigerian movies, revealing that she views the character type as a divine calling rather than a simple career choice.

"God Carved That Niche for Me" – Veteran Actress Patience Ozokwor Explains Why She Always Plays Witch Roles

Speaking during a live-streamed interview with content creator Carter Efe, the veteran actress addressed public curiosity about her recurring portrayal of antagonistic characters in Nollywood films.

Ozokwor explained that her repeated appearances as a wicked woman or witch were not something she deliberately forced on herself but rather a niche she believes was given to her by God.

According to her, "God carved that niche for me to be able to expose every ill that God created me to expose," framing her performances as a form of social instruction through storytelling.

The actress, who became a household name for her powerful performances in movies like Nna Men, Blood Sister, and Issakaba, stressed that her personal values stand in stark contrast to the characters she often portrays.

She stated, "I hate injustice. I hate war. I hate anything that shows rancour," making it clear that she personally dislikes conflict, evil, and wrongdoing despite frequently portraying characters associated with such behaviour.

When presented with those roles, she said she tries to bring everything she knows about the consequences of negative behaviour into her performance.

Ozokwor's approach to playing villainous characters is rooted in her belief that such roles serve as moral lessons for audiences.

She explained, "If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, for the end justifies the means," suggesting that her goal is to help viewers understand the consequences of wickedness and the rewards of choosing a righteous path.

"Know what will happen to you if you live a terrible life, and know what you will gain if you are a good person," she added.

The actress, who has established herself as one of Nollywood's most recognizable and influential stars, has often been associated with the intimidating mothers, witches, and antagonists she brought to life on screen.

However, her latest comments offer a different perspective on the characters that have defined her career. Rather than seeing them as mere entertainment, Ozokwor views them as an opportunity to communicate important lessons about human behaviour and the consequences of destructive choices.

Her commanding screen presence, distinctive voice, and ability to convey authority have ensured that her performances remain unforgettable for Nigerian movie lovers across generations.
