“Osun Election Must Be Free and Fair” - Tinubu Charges INEC Ahead of Saturday’s Poll

With the Osun governorship election just around the corner, President Bola Tinubu has urged INEC to ensure the poll is free, fair and peaceful, while calling on security agencies to protect voters.

President Bola Tinubu has sent a strong message to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of Saturday’s Osun governorship election, insisting that the people of the state must be allowed to choose their next governor freely and without intimidation.

With the election just hours away, Tinubu has urged INEC to ensure that the poll is free, fair, peaceful and credible, with the outcome reflecting the wishes of Osun voters. The President described the election as an important test of the electoral body’s preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections, making it particularly significant as the last off-cycle governorship election before the nationwide polls.

“Let the People Decide”

Tinubu charged INEC to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that every legitimate vote counts. He also called on voters to come out and exercise their constitutional rights without fear, while urging political parties and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully.

The message comes amid heightened attention surrounding the Osun election, with concerns about possible violence and intimidation during the campaign and voting process.

The President also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies deployed for the election to ensure adequate protection for voters, electoral officials and election materials. Security personnel were urged to prevent individuals from disrupting the voting process and to ensure that eligible voters can cast their ballots peacefully.

With major contenders including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke and APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, political tension has remained high ahead of the poll.

Saturday’s election is attracting attention beyond Osun, as its conduct could indicate how prepared Nigeria’s electoral institutions are for the 2027 general elections.

Tinubu’s message comes at a critical moment: INEC must conduct a credible election, security agencies must protect the people, and ultimately, the people of Osun must have the final say.

Now, all eyes are on Osun as voters prepare to decide who will lead the state.
