THE END OF AN ERA! Lionel Messi Retires From International Football After 21 Legendary Years With Argentina

The little boy from Rosario has finally said goodbye.

The little boy from Rosario has finally said goodbye.

After 21 unforgettable years, countless records, heartbreaking defeats and some of football’s greatest moments, Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football.

At 39, the Argentina legend has decided that his time with the national team has come to an end, closing one of the most remarkable chapters in football history. Messi announced the decision on August 31, saying it was painful but that he understood it was the right time to step away.

Messi’s journey with Argentina was far from easy.

For years, the superstar was criticised for failing to deliver a major trophy with his country despite dominating club football with Barcelona. He lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and suffered back-to-back Copa América final defeats in 2015 and 2016. The pressure became so much that, after Argentina’s 2016 Copa América defeat, Messi briefly announced his retirement from international football.

But he came back.

And what followed became one of the greatest redemption stories football has ever witnessed. Messi finally lifted his first major senior international trophy when Argentina defeated Brazil to win the 2021 Copa América. A year later, he achieved the ultimate dream.

The World Cup.

At Qatar 2022, Messi captained Argentina to glory, defeating France in a dramatic final and finally lifting the trophy that had eluded him throughout his career. He later helped Argentina win another Copa América in 2024.

Messi returned for what turned out to be his sixth and final World Cup in 2026. Argentina reached the final once again, giving the football icon the opportunity to end his international career with another World Cup triumph.

But Spain had other plans.

Argentina suffered a 1–0 extra-time defeat, making the final Messi’s last appearance for his country.  It wasn’t the fairytale ending many fans wanted. But perhaps Messi had already written his own ending years earlier.

Messi leaves Argentina as the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, with an astonishing 207 appearances and 125 goals. His international honours include the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima and Olympic gold in 2008. And, of course, there are the individual accolades including eight Ballon d’Or awards. But numbers alone cannot explain what Messi meant to Argentina.

In his farewell message, Messi admitted that the decision still hurts deeply. He said he had given everything he had to the Argentina shirt and felt the time had come to allow younger players to take their opportunity. He also thanked the supporters, his teammates, coaches and everyone who had accompanied him throughout his extraordinary international career.

And after more than two decades of carrying Argentina’s hopes on his shoulders, Messi can finally step away knowing that he did what many once believed he never would. He became a World Cup champion.

Now, the captain has said goodbye.

His international career is over, but his football career isn’t Messi remains with Inter Miami at club level.

207 appearances. 125 goals. A World Cup. Two Copa América titles. 21 years of memories.

Thank you, Leo. The era is over. The legend is forever.
