A 23-year-old Nigerian sprinter, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison in the United States after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm while in the country on an F-1 student visa.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Oghenebrume unlawfully possessed a Glock 43X 9mm pistol on February 7, 2025, despite being in the U.S. as a non-immigrant international student. Court documents revealed that the incident occurred at his apartment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was with another woman when his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived with the baby.
An argument reportedly broke out between the pair, during which Oghenebrume allegedly fired the gun while the child was present. Authorities said the confrontation later continued outside the apartment, where he allegedly fired several more shots as his ex-girlfriend fled the scene. Investigators discovered multiple bullet holes around the apartment complex following the incident.
Prosecutors also alleged that Oghenebrume smashed his ex-girlfriend’s phone and took their infant child before the woman who was with him intervened and safely recovered the baby. When deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, Oghenebrume reportedly ignored their commands, walked away from officers, and threw the firearm into nearby bushes before he was eventually arrested.
Following his guilty plea, U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick sentenced him to 27 months in federal prison. After serving his sentence, the Nigerian athlete will be subject to removal proceedings and is expected to be deported from the United States.
The sentencing has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many expressing disappointment over the promising athlete’s fall from grace.
