Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University has introduced a new policy requiring all students both new and returning to complete and submit a mandatory NDLEA Drug Test as a condition for accessing their semester examination results.
The policy is part of a broader anti-drug campaign aimed at tackling substance abuse on campus and promoting a drug-free academic environment. According to the university, students who fail to submit their test results will have their exam results withheld until they comply.
The directive follows an earlier notice issued in late 2025, which initially made the drug test compulsory for academic registration. The university later extended the deadline, but maintained that submission remains mandatory for students to fully access academic services including exam results. This new directive was issued on Friday, May 8, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the Bauchi State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Hassan Yakub, and his team to the university’s Council Chamber at Prof Buba Bajoga Senate Building, Gubi Campus, on April 30.
The test is conducted through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) portal, where students are required to register, schedule their appointments, complete the screening, and upload the resulting certificate to the university portal.
As Nigerian universities continue to tighten rules around student welfare and discipline, ATBU’s latest policy may signal a shift toward mandatory drug screening in universities nationwide.
