Airtel Suspends Airtime, Data Borrowing Amid New Lending Rules
Airtel has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit services. You can still buy airtime and data normally, but you can’t borrow for now.
The decision is linked to new government regulations on digital lending in Nigeria. The rules are part of the Digital Consumer Lending Regulations (2025), introduced by regulators such as the FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission). These rules now treat airtime/data borrowing as a form of digital loan service. This follows MTN Nigeria's earlier decision to suspend its Xtratime (airtime loan) service.
While the suspension may be frustrating in the short term, it is only temporary, and services will be restored very soon for the convenience of users.
