Another African Dream Ends as Switzerland Send Algeria Packing With 2-0 Defeat

Algeria's World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end as Switzerland delivered a clinical 2-0 victory at BC Place in Vancouver, making it another early exit for an African side after South Africa's elimination the previous day.

Another African Dream Ends as Switzerland Send Algeria Packing With 2-0 Defeat

Algeria entered the match with high hopes of securing their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout round, but those dreams were shattered within the opening 10 minutes. The North Africans started brightly, with Houssem Aouar finding space in the penalty area early on, only to see his shot narrowly miss the post. That missed opportunity proved costly as Switzerland struck with their very first dangerous attack.

Johan Manzambi sprinted down the wing and delivered a perfect cross for Breel Embolo, who easily tapped the ball into the net from close range in the 10th minute to give the European side an early lead. The remainder of the first half was fairly balanced but lacked clear chances.

Denis Zakaria headed over the bar for Switzerland, while Fares Chaibi failed to beat Gregor Kobel in the Algerian goal. Before halftime, Ibrahim Maza had a golden opportunity to equalize, but his shot was inaccurate. The Desert Foxes were made to pay for their profligacy as they headed into the break trailing.

The second half started in the worst possible way for Algeria. Just 50 seconds after the restart, Dan Ndoye capitalized on a hesitant clearance by an Algerian defender and unleashed a decisive shot from about 15 meters, beating Luca Zidane to double Switzerland's lead.

The second goal shattered Algeria's morale, and they struggled to create any significant pressure on the Swiss goal for the remainder of the match. Switzerland even missed a chance for a bigger win when Fabian Rieder's tap-in went straight to Luca Zidane in a one-on-one situation in the 80th minute.

The 2-0 victory sends Switzerland through to the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup. For Algeria, the defeat marks another African team sent home from the tournament, following South Africa's elimination at the hands of Canada. The Desert Foxes exit with their heads held high after a memorable group stage, but they will rue missed opportunities against a clinical Swiss side.
