The defending champions took an early lead through Alexis Mac Allister's header from Lionel Messi's corner in the 10th minute, giving Argentina the perfect start.
Switzerland, however, proved to be a stubborn opponent, defending resolutely and creating chances of their own. In the 65th minute, Xhaka forced Emiliano Martinez into a difficult save from distance, and moments later, Switzerland continued to press.
Switzerland's persistence paid off in the 68th minute when Dan Ndoye, who had been a constant threat, finished from a tight angle after a brilliant one-two with Rodriguez, levelling the scores at 1-1.
The goal silenced the Argentina fans and gave Switzerland belief that they could pull off a major upset against the reigning world champions.
However, the match took a dramatic turn just four minutes later. Breel Embolo, who had already been booked in the first half, was shown a second yellow card for simulation after VAR review determined he had dived in a challenge with Leandro Paredes.
Embolo left the pitch in tears, leaving his team-mates to play the remainder of regular time and extra time with only 10 men.
Despite being a man down, Switzerland held firm for the remainder of regular time, taking the game into extra time. Argentina pushed forward with renewed urgency but struggled to break down the Swiss defensive block.
Thiago Almada came close in the 96th minute, but his shot hit the outside of the post. Just when it seemed the match might be heading to a penalty shootout, Argentina finally found the breakthrough.
In the 112th minute, Julian Alvarez picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a beautiful curling shot into the far corner, giving Argentina a 2-1 lead.
With Switzerland forced to push forward in search of an equaliser, Argentina sealed the victory in stoppage time of extra time. Lautaro Martinez's shot was saved by Gregor Kobel, but the Inter Milan striker reacted quickest to pounce on the rebound and slot home the third goal.
The victory secured Argentina's place in the semi-finals, where they will face England in Atlanta on Wednesday.
